One of the first times I ever spoke to Shyamali she told me that “by day I am a stay at home mother, by night I am a YouTuber”. She and her husband run Foodie’s Hut at night while their daughter sleeps. Shyamali says she sees her channel as a way of connecting with her home country, Bengal.
Portrait of Foodie’s Hut (2016), based on mid-late 15th Century paintings of the Madonna by Carlo Crivelli, as well as various traditional depictions of Hindu goddesses Durga, the principal form of the Mother Goddess, and Saraswati, the goddess of art and knowledge.
Many elements of this work make up the ingredients for Vegetable Khichuri, a dish that Foodie’s Hut prepared in 2015 as part of Shyamaili’s celebration of Durga Puja, the largest annual festival in Bengal, where her family is from.
